This masterpiece from Cecil B. DeMile depicts the journey of the crusaders under the lead of King Richard of England, an arrogant and charismatic young ruler who, at the same time, shared some romantic elements with the Princess of Navarre. I found several interesting scenes in the film which includes the beginning of the film itself where azan (Muslim prayer call) was played to portray that Jerusalem was initially under the rule of Muslims. Azan is essential to the Muslim as it announces their daily prayer times. Next, I also found it fascinating when King Richard rejected a drink from the Prince of France to show that he blatantly refused to marry Princess Alice of France. This somehow tells the audiences that marriage settlement for the sake of the survival of a country was not so widely accepted at that time. I was also amazed by the braveness depicted by King Richard when he fearlessly took the oath to join the religious movement for the sake of the great Christendom in front of his people.
