Joining eight other researchers in a mission to analyse few of the versions of the speech of Pope Urban II at the Council of Clermont would never been as astonishing as this. The prevailing versions sourced from Fulcher of Chartres, Gesta, Robert of Rheims, Baldric of Dol and Guilbert of Nogent 1 emphasize the desperation need of Emperor of the Byzantine, named Emperor Alexius Comnena, for aid from the west against the Seljuq Turks, who had taken nearly all of the Asia Minor from him. Urban II spoke to a countless crowd at the council of Clermont and urged all to go to the aid of the Greeks and to recover Palestine from the rule of the Muslims. The acts of the council have not been preserved, but the five accounts of the speech of Urban which were written by men who some were present and heard him tells us about how their fellow Christians had been oppressed by the Muslim, that they must protect the holy site and that crusade is good for their soul 2 . Remarkably, we have made an incredible discovery of a writing made on parchment that was produced in the same period of the speech, at the end of the 10 th century. Using cutting-edge technology, we have found that the parchment had once contained ancient writing that had later been washed off and over-written. We have been able to recover the original text, using multispectral imaging, which shedding new light on the history of the first crusade in the late antiquity. It was then classified as a reply letter written on the base of lord-vassal affiliation between an anonymous man and Anna Comnena, the oldest princess of Emperor Alexius. The letter was written by Anna Comnena who is a scholar, physician, hospital administrator, and historian during the Byzantine period. She was the daughter of the Byzantine Emperor Alexios I and his wife Irene Doukaina. She once wrote an account of her father’s reign, namely Alexiad 1 Fulcher, The First Crusade , 25-37 2 Bianchini, lecture, 09/12/2016
