Amy Allison September 9, 2008 Theo 200 Pp 42 #8 Using the example of pascal and his “memorial,” explain from a biblical perspective the limitations of philosophical approaches of God. According to the reading philosophers only know God through “reason from their study of the world and human beings to what they say about the divine” (37). This sort of knowledge is foolish because humans are limited in the ability to understand the almighty being that God is. It would be impossible to understand God by the light of human reason alone. It is only through revelation, and speaking to God to we come to know how to have a relationship with him. Pascal’s “Memorial” depicts the kind of relationship that a theologian has compared to philosophers. Pascal is asking for God not to for shake him. Pascal has a trust in God and awareness to what God truly is. The philosopher would ask God what happens after death; or rather want an explanation of what God is. Pascal is almost asking if he can trust God to take care of him even in the most miserable
