Learning Objectives: Cells Cells are the smallest structural units of living things. Therefore, because we are living, we are made up of a mass of cells. Human cells, which vary in shape and size, can only be seen under a microscope. The 3 main parts of a cell are the cell membrane, the cytoplasm, and the nucleus. As you review this chapter, you will be amazed at the resemblance of a cell to the body as a whole. You will identify miniature circulatory systems, reproductive systems, digestive systems, power plants (much like muscular systems), and many other structures that will aid in your understanding of these body systems in future chapters. Learning Guide Upon completion of the lecture, and assigned reading, the student will be able to: 1. Define: a. extracellular b. intercellular c. interstitial fluid d. germ cell e. sex cell f. somatic cell g. cytosol h. cytoplasm i. hydrophobic j. hydrophilic k. organelle l. permeable m. impermeable n. semipermeable o. glycoprotein p. glycolipid
