How do the differences affect the mood of each piece? Answer: In Emily Dickinson’s poem she does not directly say she is describing snow and Emerson made it clear to what she was speaking about. The mood of “It Sifts from Leaden Sieves” is calm and welcoming while the mood for “The Snow-Storm” is intense. (Score for Question 2: ___ of 20 points) Choose a poem from Whitman, and explain how it reveals Romantic thinking. Cite examples from the poem as your support. Answer: I chose the poem “When I Heard the Learn’d Astronomer”. The poem is about the speaker at a lecture about the whole universe but when he leaves he is actually saddened by the lecture but when he goes outside and sees the night sky he feels better. Instead of using all of the scientific stuff about the universe, he uses his feelings when thinking about the sky. The speaker finds happiness and calmness in the sky by himself and not science which has some romantic thinking in the poem. “I wander’d off by myself, In the mystical moist night-air, and from time to time, Look’d up in perfect silence at stars.” (Score for Question 3: ___ of 20 points) Reread this quotation from near the end of “Walden Pond”: Many a forenoon have I stolen away, preferring to spend thus the most valued part of the day; for I was rich, if not in money, in sunny hours and summer days, and spent them lavishly; nor do I regret that I did not waste more of them in the workshop or the teacher’s desk.
