Lecture 2 Forst succesful english colony- Jamestown Almost no women, most men are rich and nobels John Smith- 1 st effective leader, made those who wanted to eat work After john, 1609-1610- starving time, and few supplies, and most people die Were about to leave, but supply ship came and gave them stuff Only reason the colony survived 1611- Indian massacre, many peope killed 1622- another massacre Best thing they did was die Turned this around b/c 1. Developed tobacco as cash crop from Virginia (1612) a. John Rolfe makes the tobacco mild for European tastes, and people want to buy it i. Makes peace with Indians ii. Marries pocohontas iii. Developed a way to preserving tobacco while it was shiped 2. Developed 1 st representative legislature in the New World (1619) a. At Jamestown- Virginia house of burgesses i. Important b/c perspective colonists would rather go where they would be represented rather than Spanish colonies 3. Taken over by King James I and made a royal colony (from corporate)
