Running head: ENHANCED SYNTHESIS PAPER 1 Enhanced Synthesis Paper Synthesis Paper Jenea Frederick Grand Canyon University: RES-811 May 2, 2017
ENHANCED SYNTHSIS PAPER Reflection After careful consideration of the professor remarks, I noticed that the synthesis of the articles was not as I first perceived. Beforehand, synthesis meet to me reading the three articles to define the theme of the articles than write a summary and topic based on the themes that were found in all three articles, but that was only half the battle. After reading the articles instead of summarizing the articles, I had to formulate my own position based on the themes found in the articles and use the articles as a reference to support my claim. I also had to rethink my introduction of the paper I had to formulate the introduction in a way that did not introduce the articles within the writing, but again as a source to support my claim. This type of paper made me rethink my whole writing process, I reread every article to gain greater depth of the themes and purpose of each article. After I formulated more sound evidence to support my argument, I reread the synthesis paper that was turned in again on module 5 and written each statement as evident to a claim that I am trying to prove which is graduate students must form their own identity away from the old style of learning to become successful in the doctoral program. Also, I had to reread my thesis statement to formulate a better argument that can gain a reader interest to persuade them that my statement is correct. The conclusion of the synthesis was not well developed because it did not revisit the themes of the articles or provided evidence to support the conclusion to help it sound more academic. These was solved by revisiting the articles and providing supporting details to support the three themes I have claimed that a doctoral learner needs to be successful. 2
ENHANCED SYNTHSIS PAPER Dependency to Independency To become a successful doctoral learner, one must learn a complete way of thinking and socializing compared to how the individual learned and studied from the undergraduate program. A successful doctoral learner develops their identity through facility and colleague support, self-direction, and adaptation to the programs’ culture (Baker and Pifer 2011; Gardner, 2009). Success can have defined as graduation rates and retention within a program, but success rates is based on a student’s adaption to the culture of the program of interest to form a professional identity within the workplace after graduation (Gardner, 2009). While test grades and GPA average was the centralized measurement to determine success as an undergraduate, doctoral learner’s measurement
