1 Dubliners: "The Sisters" and "An Encounter" 3.) It cannot be doubted that "The Sisters" has a strong religious undertones, and the sym- bolization of the chalice can be an example of this. This chalice that marks the priest's downfall can represent the "Holy Grail" or the chalice Jesus used at the last supper. The Holy Grail is im- portant to Christianity because it was used by Jesus to ceremoniously give the twelve followers his blood and body, representing his last sacrifice to humanity. Eliza says "That (the chalice breaking) affected his mind. After that he began to mope by himself..." (10) It can be assumed that the Father prided himself for his piousness and servitude to god; His actions towards the speaker does show he's a kind and gentle man, but as Old Cotter says, "they say he (the Priest) had a great wish for him (the speaker)", suggesting that the Priest was getting the speaker ready for priesthood, not only being kind for the sake of the boy (2). The breaking of the chalice repre- sents the end of the Priest's sacrifices, his death. Not only this, but since "he was too scrupulous
