MacPherson 1 Alex MacPherson 4/7/2008 English 401 Section 24 Ryan Flaherty Hybrid Cars The concept of having hybrid cars in our culture shows that as a society we have become environmentally aware and are trying to reverse the effect that we have already made to the planet . However, the fact that everyone is so resistant to transitioning to hybrids and instead buying Hummers and other gas guzzling sport utility vehicles for no practical reason shows that we like the idea of saving the planet but not actually prepared to do anything about it . At first glance, our culture seems environmentally orientated however it is actually derived from how self-centered, status loathing and hypocritical we are as a society .

MacPherson 2 The automobile has come to play a major role in our over-consuming society, which has, in turn, enabled the car to become a universal experience . As America’s population moved out of the cities and into the suburbs, obtaining a driver’s license and purchasing that first car became a rite of passage for the majority of America’s youth (Wachs, 57) . Today nearly every adult has a driver’s license and car to drive . This helps us understand why the car is the number one choice when we need to get from place to place . Automobiles, being very noticeable and highly accessible, have come to express a person’s individualism (Wachs, 59) . Even when coming straight off the assembly line, automobiles offer a prepackaged customizable product that is able to demonstrate the uniqueness of individuals and create a cozy, comfortable space that provides a sense of security and personality . For many, a car is an extension of their home and they care for it as if it were nearly a

The reemergence of hybrids in the 1990’s shows how society has become more environmentally conscious and how people have tried limiting their carbon footprint on the world . With the effects of global warming already beginning to show, via melting ice caps, rising global temperatures and changes in rainfall patterns, people have begun to worry and the emergence of hybrid cars have made people more aware of their individual effects on the environment (United States) . Our culture tends to respond best to fear, which is why now is probably the best time for the emergence of hybrid cars because everyone is already so environmentally aware and afraid of causing irreversible damage to the planet . If hybrids were introduced decades ago they would be even less popular than they are now .
