Lecture 5: September 12, 2007 Impulse of reform in the late 19 th century that transformed America Origins are important If you were an adult American in 1895 and you were looking back at period of civil war and looked at that 30 year period and looked at the changes you would be struck by how different America was Not all issues had be settled 1865-1895 is a period of extraordinary tumult, turbulent period, every aspect of American life is changed so dramatically that you cant recognize it o Agriculture to urban nation o Growth of cities is huge Chicago 4,400 people to 300,000 people o Small towns become big cities o Population doubles 35 million to 70 million after civil war People have large families A lot of immigration o There is a large advancement of architecture New sky scrapers Tallest buildings in the word Housing commerce Many mansions rise, people living in these houses have achieved great affluence and are part of the American dream o By end of the century no country can equal it capacity to achieve wealth as
