PHYS-1200 PHYSICS II SPRING 2005 Class 22 Activity: Matter Waves The sketch shows a beam of electrons that travels in the x direction, and passes through a narrow slit of width a = 10 nm. The electrons have a wavelength of λ = 1.5 nm. After passing through the slit the electrons spread out and strike a screen a distance D = 20 cm from the slit. 1. Find v x , the velocity of the electrons before they pass through the slit. 2. The electrons were accelerated from rest, through a potential difference of V , to reach the velocity calculated in question 1. Find V , the accelerating potential. 3. Consider the electrons to be waves, of wavelength = 1.5 nm, that are diffracted as they pass through the slit. At what angle θ , will the first minimum of the single slit diffraction pattern occur? 4. Find the value of y , the position of the first minimum of the diffraction pattern on the screen. The screen is 20 cm from the slit.
