Unformatted text preview: Physics II --- Class 2 Demonstrations of Gauss’s Law 1) Flying Pie Tins. If you place a stack of small aluminum pie tins on top of a Van de Graff generator and start it, the tins will fly off one at a time, starting with the top-most and working their way down, one-by- one, to the bottom-most. Why do they do this? Charge always resides on the outer surface of a conductor in order to get as far away from similar charges as possible. As the globe of the generator charges up, the charge will therefore move to the top-most pie tin. This tin accumulates charge and since it is not fixed in place, like the upper half of the globe itself, it will eventually be repelled by electrostatic forces and fly off. Just after “lift-off", it retains its charge and is repelled from the next pie tin that now becomes charged as the new outer-most tin. Once it is gone, the next tin becomes the outermost, and receives the full charge. It too will fly off…. And so on until all “birds have left the nest”. Now, you might argue that the pie tins do not represent a solid conductor. There are obviously air spaces Now, you might argue that the pie tins do not represent a solid conductor....
