Do NOT write on these sheets or take them with you! The next class needs them too! PHYS-1200 PHYSICS II SPRING 2005 Class 23 Activity: Bound Electrons SOLUTION In this activity, you will compare the energy levels and wave functions of electrons that are trapped in a potential energy well of infinite depth with those that are trapped in a potential energy well of finite depth. To start, consider an electron that is bound in a one dimensional infinitely deep potential energy well. The width of the well is 1.0 nm. The energies of the allowed states in the well are given by the formula: 2 2 2 8 n mL h E n = , for n = 1, 2, 3, 4,…. where the energy is measured from the bottom of the potential energy well, and L is the width of the well. 1. Find the value of the term 2 2 8 mL h in electron volts , for an electron in a well that is 1.0 nm wide. Check with an instructor to be sure that you have done this correctly before proceeding.

As a current student on this bumpy collegiate pathway, I stumbled upon Course Hero, where I can find study resources for nearly all my courses, get online help from tutors 24/7, and even share my old projects, papers, and lecture notes with other students.

I cannot even describe how much Course Hero helped me this summer. It’s truly become something I can always rely on and help me. In the end, I was not only able to survive summer classes, but I was able to thrive thanks to Course Hero.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
