Nevin Bahadirli Personal Morality September 6, 2006 Marquis on Why Abortion is Immoral 1) Marquis’ Argument a. It is wrong to kill adult human beings like you and me b. What makes killing adult humans wrong is that it deprives us of a valuable future c. A fetus has a valuable future d. So, killing a fetus is ( prima facie ) wrong 2) Examination of the Argument a. The conclusion: It is prima facie wrong to kill a fetus i. Only prima facie because there may be some reason that not killing the fetus would be more wrong (e.g the mother, sole provider of a family, would die if she did not have an abortion) b. Premise (1): It is wrong to kill adult human beings like you and me i. This is a moral claim, about what ought/ought not to be done ii. Contrast (1*) An adult human being (like you and I) is a person, and so it is wrong to kill an adult human being iii. (1*) reasons from an ‘is’ to ‘ought’; (1) doesn’t.
