Nevin Bahadirli Personal Morality September 13, 2006 Creation Ethics 1) The Actual Future Principle a. An early fetus that will become a person has some moral status. An early fetus that will die while it is still an early fetus has no moral status. b. ‘Early fetus’ – a fetus before it has any status-conferring intrinsic properties (ex. Having sensation, being conscious) i. Intrinsic properties – properties that a thing has regardless of what may be going on outside of itself (ex. An extrinsic property is being an aunt, because it depends on outside occurrences. An intrinsic property is being six feet tall) ii. Essential property – a property that makes something what it is (ex. An essential property of her is that she is a human being. An accidental property is being six feet tall. Both of these are intrinsic properties) 2) What follows from the AFP? a. The very liberal view of early abortion – early abortion (i.e. abortion of an early fetus) requires no moral justification
