Anthropology 143 3/8/08 Journal 1 The article “Study Shows Impact of Illegal Immigration” by J.B. Highland of the Yuma Sun newspaper explains the economic and social impacts of illegal immigration on the United States. The author cites “The Immigration Solution: A Better Plan than Today’s,” by Heather MacDonald and Steven Malanga as the source of his information. The article details how immigration is affecting the U.S. economy: “Low wage earners are competing with the new waves of low income workers, which reduce wages further in America.” Turning to the social impacts of immigration, the article points out that the Mexican birth rate is the highest in the U.S.

Unformatted text preview: and “28 percent of Mexican American males in San Diego between the ages of 18 and 24 reported having been arrested since 1995.” Here the author defines the problems with illegal immigration, but yet I feel our government (both the Republicans and Democrats) are hesitant to respond. As the author acknowledged, “the right looks for low cost labor, while the left looks for more social programs and votes.” It seems like once again, getting re-elected is more important to politicians than the interests of the American public....
