ALLIANCE SUPERMARKETS INVENTORY MANAGEMENT2IntroductionIn the text, Vonderembse and White (2013) present a case study involving Alliance Supermarkets. The company’s stores use a point-of-sale system to keep track of its inventory. The inventory is updated in the store’s computer whenever a product’s UPC is scanned. This typeof system is commonly used perpetual inventory systems, where inventory levels are monitored on a continuous basis (Vonderembse & White, 2013, sec. 10.2, para. 3). The company still experiences issues whenever changes in demand for certain products occurs and the stores are not always adequately equipped to meet the change and are often without product. Even though the point-of-sale system has dramatically helped improve previous inventory shortfalls, there are still opportunities to explore using this system so that Alliance Supermarkets can better meet the needs and demands of their customers and keep costs low. Alliance is also considering how it canmeet suppliers demands of promoting their products to customers and investigating the option of analyzing individual customer’s shopping habits and purchases to influence future decisions (Vonderembse & White, 2013, Ch. 10 Summary).New Ways to use Point of Sale InformationThe point-of-sale system for managing inventory is beneficial for accumulating real-time information for product being sold at one of Alliance Supermarket’s stores. A new way Alliance could use this data is to determine trends in demand and product sold. Vonderembse and White (2013) give an example in this case study of determining the correlation between POS information and the weather. Since Alliance already bases its inventory on previous demand patterns, Alliance can review its past sales data and review which products sold best during certain times of the year.
