Abstract: The purpose of this lab was to observe the concept of simple harmonic motion. The objective also included observing the period and amplitude of oscillation when simple harmonic motion was damped and un- damped. A cart was set up on an air track with springs attached from both sides of the cart to the ends of the track to test this concept. For part one, un-damped harmonic motion was observed by letting the cart with a weight attached to it settle at equilibrium, and then displacing it by 30 cm and letting it go. Ten oscillations were observed and the period was calculated. Damped Harmonic motion was observed by removing the weight and adding a sail of the same weight to the cart. Part two of the lab observed the change in amplitude of each oscillation caused by damping while part three observed the change in period of oscillation. From part two a graph of amplitude vs. time was plotted on semi log paper and the value of that slope was used to calculated the period of oscillation For part one of the experiment k was calculated to be .657 N/m and the T O was calculated to be 3.74 sec. For part two of the experiment the slope obtained from the graph of time vs. amplitude was calculated to be -.039 m/sec. β was calculated to be .018 and T D was found to be 3.74 sec. For part three of the experiment the T D was found to be 3.75 sec. The difference in T D for the two parts of the experiment was .01 sec. From this data, conclusions about damped and un-damped simple harmonic motion were made. Purpose/Procedure: The purpose of this lab was to observe the concept of simple harmonic motion. The objective also included observing the period and amplitude of oscillation when
