England’s Imperial Strings The 1600’s brought three powers to plant outposts in America: the Spanish, the French, and the English The fight between Protestants and Catholics brought turmoil to England II. Elizabeth Energizes England When the British defeated the great Spanish Armada in 1588, the Spanish’s hope for imperial dreams were shot This marked the rise of the British to sea domination of the world’s oceans This boosted the English natural spirit and the golden age of literature was happening III. England on the Eve of Empire The first immigrants were farmers that were ousted from their lands There was a growth of population, which provided the workers for the expanding enterprises Unemployment, adventurers, and people wanting religious freedom all had motives to make the adventure to the American wilderness IV. England Plants the Jamestown Seeding The Virginia Company was the first joint-stock company in America
