May 12, 2009 Government Terms Chapters 14-16 Dan Herber Gridlock- Book definition: The inability of the government to act because rival parities control different parts of the government. Custom definition: Mostly the public perception that congress and the president are in a disagreement because no much legislation has been passed. Pyramid Structure- Book definition: A president’s subordinates report to him through a clear chain of command headed by a chief of staff. Custom definition: Same as above with the fact that it is the most isolated for the president because the chief of staff can determine what ever the president reviews. Circular Structure- Book definition: Several of the president’s assistants report directly to him. Ad Hoc Structure- Book definition: Several subordinates, cabinet officers, and committees of officials report directly to the president on different matters. Custom definition: Same as above with it being the most impersonal and by interest of the president and the people advising. Bully Pulpit- Book definition: The president’s use of his prestige and visibility to guide or enthuse the American public. Custom definition: The president can bring up an issue and it will be in the focus of public opinion. Line-Item Veto-
