LECTURE NOTES (TEST 3) NAPOLEON Napoleon defeats the 2 nd coalition of Austria, Russia, and Britain. The British government signs the Peace of Amiens (1802). France gets to keep all of its gains on the continent (everything Napoleon had captured) Britain had to return all their captured colonies to France. After the peace of Amiens, Napoleon reorganizes the German territories. France’s position of Italy was solidified. By 1802 France is at peace for the first time in over a decade. Napoleon, at this point, has already brought France to a position of dominance in Europe. In 1802 he becomes Consul for life. Originally it was supposed to be an elected position but he took the position. He begins to establish a hereditary empire. On December 2, 1804 Napoleon becomes emperor. Pope Pius II anoints him emperor. Napoleon does a lot of reorganization in France. He is trying to stabilize the government after the temporary directorate government. In 1800 he establishes the bank of France to help the state’s ability to borrow money. He also got rid of the inflated money of the revolution and stabilizes the currency. He also begins a focus on education. He says it’s the state’s responsibility to educate people. In 1802 he establishes state secondary schools known as Lycees . In 1804 he establishes the Civil Code ( The Civil Code of 1804 ). This is his most significant legacy. The Napoleonic code made the rights of property owners the highest right (it couldn’t be interfered with). The code was over 2,000 articles long and established the equality of all people before the law. It also established freedom of religion. Napoleon had strong attitudes about the family. He considered the family to be the most important intermediary between the state and the people; he thought it was the way the people became good citizens. The code made women and children legally dependent on their husbands or fathers. It was the man’s job to ensure the proper education of his family. It granted men control of family property. The status of women in the code reflects Napoleon’s low view of women. He said they are nothing more than machines for producing children. Napoleon said his glory was his civil code. Napoleon decides to take an interest in the French colonies. He retakes the French colony of Haiti and reinstitutes slavery there. It leads to a huge slave uprising. Napoleon sends his army to Haiti and they are defeated. This makes Haiti independent. This made Napoleon very angry and in need of more funding. He sells the huge Louisiana territory to the U.S. in 1803. This was the Louisiana Purchase . In Russia there is a new Tsar, Alexander I . He was a religious mystic and he believed God had given him the mission to destroy Napoleon. In 1805 the Third Coalition is created (Russia, Austria, and Great Britain). Napoleon decides to invade Great Britain. He gets a navy together and plans to invade Great Britain.
