Fish Diversity -Fishes presence on earth predates man’s by more than 500 million years and all other vertebrates by 00 million years -many structures and ways of life found in higher vertebrate originated in fishes: -basic ground plan -sight -internal fertilization -intrauterine nourishment, including placenta -live birth -learning -memory -Fishes are not only diverse, but come in many different sizes and shapes -most fishes are fusiform (torpedo-shaped) in shape -Fusiform – streamline configuration with an elliptical to round cross-section and narrow caudal peduncle (Scombridae-tuna and mackerel) -Compressiform – similar to fusiform, but considerably more laterally compressed (sunfishes, snappers, porgies, and flounder) -Depressiform – flattened dorsoventrally (skates, angel sharks, toad fish, goose fishes) – live on bottom -Anguilliform – eel-like fishes, elongated bodies, blunt or wedge-shaped heads, tapering or rounded tails, small or absent paired fins, long dorsal and anal fins (eels, loaches, hagfishes)
