Chapter 1 Study Guide 1. What is the socialist perspective? What does it bring about? Sociological Perspective: understands human behavior by placing it within its broader social context. It brings about the question what groups influence people and how these people are influenced by their won society. 2. What is a society? Society : a group of people who share a culture and a territory. 3. Who is Wright C. Mills? Wright C. Mills is a sociologist who believed that each culture has a perspective on roles of men and women and that people act the way they do because of external influences or experiences that shape their behavior in society. 4. What are the eternal questions? The eternal questions are why war exists, why some people become more powerful than others, why are some rich and others poor. 5. What does science require? Science requires the development of theories that can be tested by research. 6. What is the scientific method? Scientific Method : uses objectives and systematic observations to test theories.

7. Who is Karl Marx? What is Marxism? Karl Marx believed that the roots of human misery lay in class conflict, the exploitation of workers by those who own the means of production. Karl Marx is an advocate of class conflict, which is the struggle between capitalists and workers. This will end in the workers coming together to overthrow the capitalists causing a classless society where they are working to their abilities and receiving to their needs. Marxism is saying that revolution is the only way for the working class to gain control of a society. Class Conflict : Marx’s term for the struggle between capitalists and workers. 8.
