Take Home Exam Israel (North) and Judah (South) became a united kingdom in the year of 1000 B.C.E., under the rule of King David 1 . He was king over Judah for 7 years and king over both for 33 years 2 . The kingdoms were united when David brought the Ark of the Covenant to the city of Jerusalem to make it the capital of the two kingdoms 3 . Once David passed away his son Solomon became king. Solomon built a temple for the Ark to a centralized place for worship 4 . Though he built this temple during his reign there were a lot of burdens he placed upon his people, by seeking to conquer more tribes in the North. It was left up to Solomon’s son Rehoboam if he would reign like his father did before him. The Israelites made it apparent to Rehoboam about the heavy yoke Solomon put on them. They asked if he will lighten the load in return for them being his servants forever. Rehoboam sought out advice from the elders on what he should do in this situation. Their response was to listen to the Israelites and in return they will be his servants. However, Rehoboam ignored the advice of the elders and turned to the young people. The response of the young people was to put more burdens on the Israelites; this was the advice that Rehoboam listened to 5 .
