BIO NOTES – Ch. 3 (Molecules) I. Structure/Function organic compounds = “molecules of life”; contain C and at least one H o have functional groups (atoms/atom clusters bonded to C ) C makes up >1/2 of living things; C has versatile bonding behavior o most org. compounds have C backbone w/ func. groups attached #/kind/arrangement of func. groups affects properties like polarity o ex: sugar ( alcohol = at least one hydroxyl group) dissolves easily while larger alcohols do not metabolism = activities for cells to acquire/use energy o requires enzymes (proteins which speed up reactions) Class of Metabolic Reaction What Happens? Condensation 2 molecules bond into a larger one Cleavage molecule splits into 2 smaller ones (ex: hydrolysis ) Functional group transfer 1 molecule gives up a functional group and a diff. molecule accepts it Electron transfer 1+ electrons taken from 1 molecule are donated to another Rearrangement 1 type of organic compound converts to another thru juggling of internal bonds
