Macroeconomics Mr. Patyk March 19, 2008 Written Assignment #1 In One Pay Gap Shrinks, Another Grows , David Wessel discusses that although the distance between the average salary of men and women is decreasing, the average income between the upper-class and middle and lower class is growing at a rapid pace. Wessel’s editorial article includes quotes from a Harvard University economics and a Democratic politician and labor economist, Stephan J. Rose. Rose believes that the new pay gap is between upper class and lower-class because “the American middle class is disappearing.” He continues to say that over “the last six years have seen every little wage growth for the bottom 80% of the work force.” Wessel reverts back to the wage gap between men and women by stating that over the last twenty years, women’s wages have increased 17% closer to the typical man’s wage; and that there is a much less percentage of women who become teachers. He continues to state that the typical women’s wage increase has more than doubled the man’s wage over the last decade. He credits these female wage increases to more female college graduates yearly. Finally Wessel discusses the growing gap which is the “economic winners and losers.” He is referring to the lower and middle class losing to the upper class. Productivity is the amount of output her hour of work. I see it as the amount of output per hour versus the amount of input required, less input and more output equals
