Long 1.22.08 FRENCH LOU IS IANA: (1682-1763) European Exploration : * (Important to know that the time period of exploration matters in regards to what they were seeking) * God, Gold, and Glory—esp. gold * Spain passes by/on Louisiana * Spain, Portugal, etc…were going to humanize (civilize) the heathens (Native Americans) * Ex—Hernando De Soto o Spanish explorer that discovers Incan treasure in Mexico. o 1539—starts expedition back to new world ° Looking for glory through treasure ° Crosses modern day southern US (FL, MS, LA) by foot ° Given credit for discovering Mississippi River o 1542—dies from a fever ° Buried in the Mississippi River so as not to be defiled by the Native Americans who he treated very brutally o Survivors carry stories of LA to Mexico (they don’t have a lasting presence) F rance and Louisiana : * France exploring from the North—same incentives for God, Glory, and Gold o Looking for a route to China * From New France (now Canada) claimed by France in 1534 * 1672—Joliet and Marquette descend the river as far as AK, MS o Referred to as “father” of waters o They stop because they are warned that natives are armed with weapons—turn around and go back to Canada * French explorers will “claim” Louisiana...
