Veterinarian:How do Veterinarians benefit Society?Emily FieldsSenior ProjectEnglish 12
Fields 1Emily FieldsKaravasEnglish 129 November 2015Veterinarians throughout the world help millions of animals in need of a home and medical care. In the past, nobody knew what to do with the amount of over populated and sick animals. Many centuries ago, an animal doctor known as a Veterinarian was discovered. Veterinarians try to cure animals of disease and make them well. Veterinarians have other focusesother than animals. Their research can help humans as well. They can discover medicines that make animals healthy, because of all the vaccines and shots given to animals it keeps them from getting sick and keeps us from falling ill if bitten by one. They also help the animals that we eat be in good shape and they keep the population of animals down by neutering and spaying them. Veterinarians are useful throughout the world. They impact and benefit the lives of humans everyday.Veterinarians go through many years of college so they can help sick animals. The medicines they give to them include anti-parasitics, opioid pain relievers, steroids, and non-steroidal anti-inflammatories. Anti-parasitics are meant to kill internal parasites such as intestinalworms. Opioid pain relievers like oxycodone and fentanyl can help relieve pain. Steroids can suppress the immune system like reducing allergic reactions. Non-steroid anti-inflammatories will reduce swelling and inflammation (“Your Pets Medication”). To help protect humans and
Fields 2other animals, vets highly recommend that animals receive a rabies shot (“Veterinary Medicines”). According to the Americans for Medical Program, millions of animals would be dead because of all the diseases like feline leukemia, anthrax, distemper, and the canine parvo virus if it weren’t for Veterinarians(“Animal Research”). Through extensive research, vets have made vast improvements in prevention of disease in animals. In efforts to keep the animal population down, veterinarians will spay or neuter them. Spaying and neutering benefits both the animal and the owner. The tendency to bite, messy heat cycles in females, and spraying can all be reduced by getting an animal fixed. This can also reduce the amount of strays on the streets. Every year, the community will spend lots of money to provide care and shelter. There are a few myths about fixing animals. An animal will not get fat because they got fixed. Over eating and the lack of exercising is what causes an animal to gain weight (“PAWS”). “If the population wasn’t kept down and that there were no Veterinarians, the poultry population would have to increase by 20% and the cattle population would have to increase by 80% just to be able to keep the production level the same” (“Veterinary Medicines”).
