Lab 6: TLC Sophie Scheidlinger 19337239 Purpose: To be able to separate and identify polar and non-polar compounds using thin layer chromatography. To be able to identify an unknown compound through its known properties in TLC. Discussion: The reason our group decided on using 100% ethyl acetate and 60:40 hexane : ethyl acetate was because these two compounds gave the best separation of the known compounds. Since the silica gel is a polar adsorbent, if the solvent is not polar enough, none of the compounds will move from the origin and will therefore not be separated. If the solvent is too polar, the compounds spend all of their time in the mobile phase and will not separate.

Unformatted text preview: Aspirin is the unknown that was identified. The unknown moved alongside aspirin, but was distinctly separate from Acetaminophen, Ibuprofen, and Caffeine. The order of the other three compounds was predicted correctly with the highest RF value for Ibuprofen, then Aspirin, then Acetaminophen, and then Caffeine. The RF values predicted for these were relatively similar to the experimental values. Conclusion: Thin Layer Chromatography is a quick and easy way to identify unknown compounds by comparing them with known RF values of other compounds. It’s also a good way to find out if a compound is polar or non-polar by how far it will move up the gel....
