Sophie Scheidlinger Investigating Solubility and Acid-Base Reactions February 27, 2008 Discussion: In part 1, diethyl ether, ethyl acetate, acetone, dichloromethane, water, and ethanol were added to hexane. Hexane bonds through induced dipole-induced dipole interactions. Water and hexane formed two clear layers because water is polar and hexane is non-polar. The hydrogen bonds cannot replace the induced dipole forces that occur in hexane. The mixture of ethanol and hexane started out as a mixture but overtime slowly separated because ethanol is slightly polar. Originally the ID forces of the carbon chain on ethanol were able to bond to the carbon chain of hexane. Over time ethanol began to separate because of its hydroxyl group. In part 2, acetone, diethyl ether, ethyl acetate, toluene, dichloromethane, and ethanol were mixed with water. Water is polar and has D-D interactions. All of the substances except for ethanol did not mix because they are non-polar. Ethanol and water mixed completely because of the D-D interactions that formed between them. In part 3, it was determined that propanol and ethanol are completely

As a current student on this bumpy collegiate pathway, I stumbled upon Course Hero, where I can find study resources for nearly all my courses, get online help from tutors 24/7, and even share my old projects, papers, and lecture notes with other students.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
