I. War a. End of the play-off system -By 1754, france and Britain had claimed much of the land in western America -few people settled this land however -difficult for british because they had to cross the appalachain mountains -Iroquois resisted settlement both diplomatically and violently -Indians lose ability to control fur trade and thus the ability to play the French and the English -Alliances between the English and the Indians were crumbling because of increased westward settlement - Albany congress 1754: meeting held in Albany New York where the English attempted to sooth the worries of the Iroquois and asked for the help of the Indians against the French -Highlighted the needs of the colonies to work together -Done best by Ben Franklin: Albany plan of union -regulate Indian affairs -regulate taxes -regulate defense -produced America’s first political cartoon, Join or Die -Ideas didn’t quite work because the colonists were still too suspicious of eachother, and the colonists still thought of themselves as British. b.
