The Enlightenment Man has been given great gift of reason from god Rejected Calvinist ideas John Locke: humans were born with tabula rosa or clean slate Thought all humans were given capacity for knowledge= foundation for the enlightenment A. Scientific Revolution Sir Issac Newton: theories about gravitation o Idea of mechanistic universe governed by natural laws took off in other areas such as the economy o The idea that these laws could be understood drew interest Earth centered universe was replaced by the idea of a sun centered universe – Copernicus Adam Smith wrote The Wealth of Nations: saying that there is an invisible hand governing the economy, supply and demand make the economy function smoother than it appears John Locke argued that natural rights existed that governments should be based on: life liberty and property B. Natural Law in Human Relations C. Ben Franklin Epitomized the enlightenment in America Born in boston to a devout calvininst family Eventually owned his own print shop where he edited and printed the Pennsylvania Gazette’ Deism: described a God that created the universe, set it in motion, and then stepped back —didn’t believe that God played an active part in every day life
