Domestic Policy Retrenchment o Simple, original intent of the Constitution o Focused on fiscal policy o Albert Gallatin was the Secretary of Treasury Tried to convince that central bank was necessary, but was against the national debt. Very successful at reducing the debt. Reducing spending through eliminating many taxes, trimming the military, Judiciary o John Marshall, chief justice of the Supreme Court, appointed by Adams o Judiciary Act 1801—midnight appointees under Adams o Marbury v. Madison (1803)—gave the judiciary the power to declare a federal law was unconstitutional Marshall stated: marbury had the right to the appointment but that the court didn’t have the power to enforce it.
