HDF 322 -- KITT Fall 2008 Jackson Case Study Ross Jackson is a management information system (MIS) specialist for a management company. At age 29, he is making enough money to live comfortably as a single person with no children. In the six years since he graduated from UT, he has not worried too much about how he was spending his money. However, his sister and brother-in-law's untimely and unexpected death in an auto accident within the past year has caused Ross to take a closer look at his own finances. For the past three years, Ross has been dating Leslie East and they are beginning to talk about marriage and children. All of this has made Ross a little more concerned about the rising debt on his credit cards. Ross and Leslie have not discussed their finances, but Ross is sometimes irritated by the way Leslie "pinches pennies." Leslie refuses to buy anything unless it's marked down, and she always shops and shops for the best prices. ..even on small purchases. Ross does not understand this behavior because he knows Leslie makes more money and has fewer bills than he does. Ross likes to spend money. He gets pleasure from buying Leslie gifts and does not like it when she tells him he spent too much money on her. While he does not consider himself a spendthrift, he does enjoy the lifestyle money can buy. Ross collects Movie Posters , likes shopping at garage sales, and stays in shape by bodybuilding. He travels several times a year to various cities to compete in bodybuilding events. Ross lives in a duplex he has been renting for the past four years. His father, Thomas Jackson is a widower. Thomas has been caring for his two grandchildren (children from the deceased sister and brother-in-law), but health issues have made it impossible for him to continue his guardianship of Amir and Annie. Ross has agreed to assume the guardianship of his nephew and niece after the winter holidays. Ross would like to be in a position to help his father in the future if Thomas needs financial support. Leslie supports Ross's desire to help his family -- Leslie helped her youngest brother with the costs of his college education. Motivated by these financial concerns, Ross attended a two-part seminar on financial management at his bank. He received data-gathering forms at the seminar and has completed them as fully as possible. These forms are presented on the following pages. Read the information Ross has provided so that you can "get acquainted" with him. As you first read the case, you probably will not understand all the vocabulary or why certain information is even included on the forms. But remember, this is just the beginning of the course … by December it will be familiar. 1
