Sociology 3-18-08 Inequalities of race and ethnicity: Definition of a Minority Group- any group who because of physical or cultural characteristics is singled out for differential and unequal treatment, and who regard themselves as objects of collective discrimination and or prejudice. - Diet, dress, dialect, but most importantly race. - Cultural characteristics- - Physical characteristics- Prejudice- prejudgment, attitude (blondes have more fun etc.) - Behavior (e.g., segregation, expulsion) - Examples of prejudice without discrimination? o - Examples of discrimination without prejudice? Merton’s typology of prejudice and discrimination - All weather liberals prejudice? No. Discriminatory? No - Active Bigots Prejudice? Yes. Discriminatory? Yes - Timid Bigots Prejudice? Yes. Discriminatory? No - Fair Weather Liberals- discrimination that often times is not conscious or realized by people. Prejudice? No. Discrimination? Yes. An example is institutionalized discrimination. Prevent people the opportunities that you are giving other people.
