Due to the increased threat of terrorist attacks and a rapidly changing external environment, the FBI has had to redirect its goals in order to achieve the organization’s stated mission to “protect and defend the United States against terrorism and foreign intelligence threats, to uphold and enforce the criminal laws of the United States, and to provide leadership and criminal justice services to federal, state, municipal, and international agencies and partners” (Federal Bureau of Investigation [FBI], n.d., p. 6).
