Week 9 (7/5 – 7/10): Cluster 12 Motivation in Learning and Teaching Cluster Objectives: Module 32: Motivation Basics 12.1: Define motivation and differentiate among five theoretical explanations for learner motivation. Module 33: Needs, Goals, and Beliefs 12.2: Explain how learners’ needs influence their motivation to learn. 12.3: Describe the different kinds of goal orientations and their influences on motivation. 12.4: Discuss how students’ beliefs and attributions can influence motivation. Module 34: Interests, Curiosity, and Emotions 12.5: Describe the roles of interests, curiosity, and anxiety in motivation. Module 35: On Target: Motivation to Learn in School 12.6: Explain how teachers can influence and encourage students’ motivation to learn. Assignment #1 Read the Textbook, Cluster 12 Motivation in Learning and Teaching Assignment #2 A Task 1: (due by 11:59 p.m. EST on Thursday, July 7 th , 2016). List at least 2 things that motivate you in your academic pursuits (e.g., master a subject, get good grades, etc.) and at least 2 things that motivate you in a hobby or outside interest (e.g., working out, pledging a sorority/fraternity, etc.). My academic pursuit is motivated by my desire to provide a stable future for my family. As an older student in my 40s going back to school is motivated by the vision of a better future through education. Even though I have a degree from another country which I obtained before arriving in the United States, this degree in my country of birth does not provide financial stability as the economic system there does not compensate education the same way it is done in other countries. In Cuba, the surgeon, university professor and the individual who collects the waste in the community all live in the same dilapidated apartment complex and struggle to obtain basic needs such as an adequate diet, hygiene and health care. Financial stability provides a safer feeling of preparedness to face any emergencies than can arise unexpectedly. My motivation feeds my determination to succeed and graduate, which is the only way that I can change my future of that of my family. I always challenged by a new class to do very well and be successful. I collect guns, handguns, and rifles, etc. I believe in the right to bear arms and that each citizen should participate in their own safety. I like hunting and the adventure of being able to hunt and track an animal in season that can eventually become dinner. It is the thrill of the kill and then the satisfaction from a meal that I did just buy at the supermarket. Where I come from there are no big chain supermarkets with fresh meat ready for purchase like in the United States but rather cuts of meat dangling from a post without refrigeration which sells quickly as the supply is low and the demand is high. In fact since migrating to the United States I have always looked for pig farmers and purchased a whole hog, taken it home and prepared it for the deep freezer. I also like to watch movies that are based on true stories as I find them to be interesting and filled with information that I may not have known about and often they are inspiring depending on the content and message in the film.
