Discussion The analysis of the unknown purple solution #2 through scheme two resulted in the determination of sodium, iron, and potassium cations in the solution. The first step, flame test, confirmed the sodium ion while the cinchonine test in step six confirmed iron and the thiocyanate test in step eight confirmed potassium. The DMG test in step in step six and the flame test in step eight were two tests that helped in negating magnesium, calcium, nickel, and iron cations. For step seven of scheme two, the DMG test on the solution to test for copper resulted in inconclusive results. The result of the DMG test was a goldish orange solution with no precipitate. However for the known DMG test on copper, it resulted in a dark brown solution with no precipitate. With little difference between the colors it was difficult to determine whether there was presence of copper or not. However it was eventually concluded that copper was not present in the solution, but there is still some question whether or not that conclusion is accurate. The analysis of the unknown purple solution #2 through scheme one resulted in
