Asoka – Maurya Empire Notes 21/09/2008 21:17:00 Maurya Empire (324-184 BCE)     Ancient India; capital city in Pataliputra Founded by Candragupta; overthrew preceding Nanda dynasty Candragupta succeeded by son, Bindusara in 297 BCE o Extended Empire to Mysore (with exception of Kalinga) Bindusara succeeded by son, Asoka in 272 BCE Asoka consecrated in 268 (make sacred) o Maurayan Emperor 272-232 BC (Born 304 BC) o Considered one of the greatest Indian Rulers of all-time;  national hero o Buddhism prospered under Asoka Ordered Edicts (proclaimation issued by person of authority) to  be carved in rocks, pillars, caves which is first tangible evidence  of Buddhist History 33 Inscriptions found (16 Rock Edicts, 3 minor rock  Edicts, 7 Pillar Edicts, 3 minor pillar Edicts, 2 Pillar  Inscriptions, 2 minor Pillar inscriptions)
