Natalie Cook Lab 1 AP Biology 12 September 2007 Title: Diffusion and Osmosis Objectives: to explore the processes of diffusion and osmosis in a model membrane system; to investigate the effect of solute concentration on water potential as it relates to living plant tissues Hypothesis: Materials: distilled water, 250 mL beaker, dialysis tube, glucose solution, .2 M sucrose, .4 M sucrose, .6 M sucrose, .8 M sucrose, 1.0 M sucrose, 250 mL beaker, potato, cork borer Procedures: 1. Obtain a 30-cm piece of 2.5 cm presoaked dialysis tubing. Tie off one end of tubing to form a bag. 2. Test the 15% glucose/ 1% starch solution for the presence of glucose. 3. Place 15 mL of the 15% glucose/ 1% starch solution in the bag. Tie off the other end of the bag, leaving adequate space for eventual expansion of the bag’s contents. 4. Fill beaker 2/3 full with distilled water, add about 4 mL of Lugol’s solution to the distilled water and record color of the water. 5.
