Unformatted text preview: California Geography 8/5/08 ← ← California- about 158 sq. miles (about 100 million acres) • As big as New England, New York, and Pennsylvania • Population close to those states • Alaska (550) and Texas – only states larger than CA • Largest county in the US- San Bernardino County (larger than state of Connecticut) • 1250 miles of coastal shoreline o Second to Alaska • 39 minerals found only in CA out of the whole Earth ← Extreme isolation • Very isolated in comparison to other states • First explorers- didn’t even attempt to occupy Alta CA • Difficult to get to o Sierra Nevada; deserts ← Alta California • Area north of San Diego; upper CA • Baja (lower), Alta (upper) ← Mild climate • Extremes of climate- Truckee to Death Valley • Otherwise so mild compared to the other states • Doesn’t get as hot or cold as other states ← James J.
