The purpose of the experiment is to prepare a soap via alkaline hydrolysis of a oil 1 . In this case, sunflower oil was used. The sunflower oil was added to a flask along with water, ethanol and NaOH. The ethanol and water were used to dissolve the oil and the sodium hydroxide is what goes in to cleave the triglyceride bond of the oil. This yellow-like mixture was refluxed for 45 minutes. This was then adding to a water and NaCl solution. Upon the addition to the salt water, the color became more pale. While cooling in an ice bath, the mixture began thickening. The solution was vacuum filtered to remove the excess harmful NaOH that was previously used. The precipitated soap was left behind and used for following tests. The sunflower oil gave a great yield of product. The test of residual alkalinity was performed by taking a small pellet of soap, dissolving it in ethanol and then adding phenolphthalein. The solution immediately turned pink indicating the
