1 Music 1313 Study Questions, Week 2 Informational questions: Listen to Louis Armstrong’s solo in “Potato Head Blues” with the Gunther Schuller reading in mind.  Note Schuller’s discussion of bent notes and other alterations as important components to Armstrong’s  sound, esp. pp. 94-97.  What is a “rip”?  For help, look it up in the New Grove Dictionary of Music  and Musicians (in the Library Gateway [http://library.cornell.edu], click Databases, then chose Music,  then Grove Music).  Look up “rip” and follow the link to “gliss” to get more information.  Find a rip  toward the end of Armstrong’s solo in “Potato Head Blues” and note its time (does it occur 4 minutes  27 seconds into the recording? Then, note it as 4:27).  (Extra consideration: how does Schuller’s  assessment square with Szwed’s?) Read the Walser selection.  How does the story of James Reese Europe’s regimental band’s encounter
