Power is a Key Issue in Decision Making o 1. Building leadership is vital o 2. Great leaders make great decisions II. What is Power? A. Do You Have Power? o 1. Can you control others, or just influence them? o 2. Who has the most power over you? Why? B. What is Power? o 1. Perceived ability and willingness to control outcomes. o 2. Two kinds of ability. A. Force through coercion B. Change through persuasion, modeling, and resource control. o 3. Perceived ability is the target’s perception of your ability and it’s  always subjective. C. Perceived Willingness to Use Power o 1. Does the target believe you are motivated to use your power? o 2. How far can you be pushed before you will use it? o 3. Target makes judgments based on your actions in past situations. o 4. Power is a combination of these two perceptions: Does the target  believe you have the ability to control/influence, and will you use it?
