MATH 1205 Calculus I Fall 2008 CRNs: 93871, 93865, 93878 Instructor: Mrs. Diane Agud Office: 421 McBryde Hall Office Telephone Number: 231-8208 E-mail Address: agud@math.vt.edu Home Page: http://www.math.vt.edu/people/dagud/index.html Course web page: http://www.emporium.vt.edu/math1205 Office Hours: Monday, Wednesday and Friday: 10:00 a.m. – 12:00 noon Monday, Wednesday and Friday: 1:15 p.m. – 2:15 p.m. Or by appointment TEXT: University Calculus by Hass, Weir, and Thomas PREREQUISITES: You must have one of the following: (1) a grade of B or better in Math 1015/1016, or (2) two units of high school algebra, one unit of geometry, 1/2 unit each of trigonometry and precalculus, and placement by the Mathematics Department, or (3) a passing grade in the Calculus Readiness Exam. CONTENT: We will cover the material listed on the course syllabus . Any changes will be announced in class. Each student is responsible for taking weekly on-line quizzes and completing assigned homework. FORMAT OF THIS CLASS: Lecture classes will meet on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, for 50 minutes. The assignments may be obtained from the 1205 homepage. TESTS: There will be three tests . These tests will count for a total of 45% of your final grade. Tests will be given in the evening on the dates specified on the course syllabus. The locations for the exams will be announced on the math 1205 webpage under “ Test Info ”. Typically, they will not be the same as our lecture class. You must take tests on the specified date. If you have a scheduling conflict, you may take the test later the same evening. You must provide written verification of the conflict at least one week before the test date. No other makeup or early tests will be given. If you will miss a test due to a University sponsored activity you must make arraignments beforehand to take the test. For a University sponsored activity, a note from a coach verifying this absence is required. For an excused absence, the final exam score will be substituted for the missed test score. If you request an excused absence from a test, you must phone or see me on test day, and present me with a written excuse within three calendar days. Excused absences will include severe illness or death. Being unprepared is not an excused absence. One excused absence is allowed, beyond that you will
