These plot devices are known as peripeteia, reversal, and anagnorisis, recognition. Oedipus is one of Aristotle’s greatest works that shows the “reversal” or turning point that becomes sudden “recognition” of realizing the terrible truth. Many modern playwriters contradict some of Aristotle’s fundamental structure, and aspect values but the theory remains. In Tennessee Williams,Glass Menagerie, the leading character is no hero like Aristotle principles, instead he acts rash and emotionally.
