Common writing mistakes and suggestions for improving your writing (Random notes) Punctuation,   such   as   a   comma   and   period,   goes   inside   quotation   marks.    “Be   good.”    Question   marks   and   exclamation   points   go   outside   the   quotation   marks.    “Be   great”!     Period   goes   after   the   parenthesis   of   an   in text   citation.    (Chanley,   2014,   p.   2).     Direct   quotes   require   the   following:   o In   quotation   marks   or   set   up   as   blocked   indented   paragraph   o Citation   with   page   or   paragraph   #    She   wrote,   “Don’t   go   in   the   garden”   (Smith,   2012,   para.   5)   o Reference   in   list   of   references     Do   not   just   insert   a   quotation,   even   if   it   has   a   citation.    Introduce   it   with   something   like:    According   to   Smith   and   Jones   (2006)   .   .   .   Or   the   Chanley   website   offers   the   following   description   of   her   business:   .   .   .   (Then,   just   the   page   or   paragraph   #   in   parentheses   follows   it.)
