The earth’s population is predicted in a number of years to grow exponentially. This means a number of things that can have negative effects. New developing countries like China that are adopting American lifestyles. India that is having problems with birth control and is becoming overpopulated. Japan, which is having the opposite problem and is having an imbalance between the old and new generation. Lastly some parts of Africa where there population is growing at a fast pace but the population is mostly young because of disease and poverty. All these countries have a common linking factor which is imbalances of population. Also they have common solutions as far as population control. Are these solutions producing the best good for the long term? Is it right to put constraints on people’s right to produce. Is it wrong for developing countries to grow at the expense of sentient beings and non-sentient beings? The moral concerns that should be focused on is harm and fairness. Is it right to put boundaries on the right for humans to progress even though it has long term negative effects on sentient beings and the non-sentient beings. What process causes the most good? For China the wellbeing of the people and the motivation to have the same pleasures as other well developed countries is what causes the most good. Over the years Chinas economy as grown at a fast pace and has caused a huge growth in their middleclass. In result it has a huge group of consumers that have a demand. Which leads to more production. China’s factories are still in the past and don’t have the regulations that U.S factories have which means they pollute way more than more developed countries. So looking at the long term rather than snort term good which one causes the most good. As the NOVA film stated if China doesn’t cleanup their environment it has a lot of negative effects. Because of so much smog it is lending to a lot of respiratory health issues. With all the new development people from the countryside are moving into the city which is causing an imbalance in
small villages there is a growing gap between social classes. Also there is a new mentality of having the “good life” which means having a car, house, and good paying job. They are overworking there land to meet the demand of food but it they keep going at the pace their going there will be insufficient natural resources. This causes harm in the long run and long term good is better than snort term good. Chinas solution is to invest in greener factories which in the long term is good. If china’s economy moves at the same pace as its industrial development the effect in the long run would be good for all sentient being. China is an ethical egoist looking at what in the long term is in its best interest.
