Levitsky The Cause and Cure for the Obesity Epidemic Levitsky’s Law of Body Weight: body tissue = energy intake – energy expenditure USDA Production Data shows: energy intake increasing by ~35.16 cal/day/yr (food Increase BMI = 10 ~ 15 kcal/day Increase food intake = 30 kcal/day we’re eating more Theories of why we eat: Biological Theorists - eating behavior is part of a biological system responsible for regulation of body weight Environmental Theorists - eating behavior is a response to environment stimuli Biological – pills; surgery Random Control Model of Weight Regulation Assumption: 1. Daily intake is normally distributed 2. Daily expenditure is normally distributed 3. Energy expenditure increases with increasing body weight Lean body mass increases with increasing body weight
