Pearson BTEC Level 5 HND Diploma Construction and the BuiltDesign of Beams and Columns of Steel,Reinforced Concrete, Timber and Masonry Buildings.Purpose of this assignmentThis assignment provides learners to develop skills of design associated with steel beams andcolumns, reinforced concrete beams and columns, timber beams and posts and finally masonrycolumns in compliance with the appropriate British Standard code of practice or European Codeof Practice. Learners are encouraged to work with real-life examples and develop the skillsneeded to produce effective and economic designs.You are a graduated structural engineer and you have been asked to undertake the structuralbeam and column design for different construction materials such as steel, reinforced concrete,timber and masonry. To design the beam and column with different construction materials,firstly you have to determine the different loads on structures analysed. Then The structure ischecked for safety. Euro Code has to be used in this procedure. It is possible that this check mayshow that the structure is underdesigned (unsafe and/or unserviceable) or overdesigned(uneconomic) so that adjustments must be made to the arrangement and/or the sizes of themembers; the analysis and design check re then repeated.
